Recent research from Harvard Business School has proven that compensating employees is important, but how you compensate them can make a difference in productivity. Providing some compensation as a perceived gift, bonus or non-monetary incentive can boost employee productivity by as much as 20%, the study shows.

As an employer you can still calculate the “gift” as standard compensation. The key to boosting productivity is making it unexpected by the employee. Whether you choose to gift money, or non-monetary compensation like gift cards to popular retailers like Children’s PlaceThe Limited or Burlington Coat Factory, the unexpected surprise factor is what causes employees to work harder and dedicate themselves to the goals of the organization. When employers present partial compensation as a gift or reward, employees feel the employer personally appreciates the job they do on a regular basis. Building one-on-one relationships with employees raise not only productivity, but also retention rates and overall job satisfaction.
